Literacy is quickly extending beyond reading novels and writing reports and essays. We're consuming information and media at a fascinating rate. Devices give us instant access to information and we carry them on our persons as if they are a part of our body.
Social media offers up information anywhere from 140 characters at a time to video clips, blogs, and online slideshows.
Entertainment for adolescents consists of creating and watching 15 second lip-sync videos on Musical.ly (the social media app boasts millions of users, mainly teens) along with other social media platforms. In a world where the ability to both consume and contribute to the online world becomes more accessible, it’s important we educate youth on doing so in a positive manner.
The 2016 Digital Storytelling Camp provided an opportunity for youth to engage in digital media creation tools while at the same time emphasizing the importance in acting as a positive digital citizen. In particular, this camp focused on the 7 Teachings (also known as the 7 Grandfather Teachers and/or 7 Sacred Teachings) as a basis for acting responsibly online, in the classroom, and in the community. The camp also examined Common Sense Media’s Digital Compass App which interactively demonstrates ethical online practices to students.
The 2016 Digital Storytelling Camp was the first of it’s kind in the area, running for two weeks during regular school hours with students in grade 5 and 6.

The Internet Safety Show
|
At the start of camp, it was clear the students were aware of and experienced some breaches in Internet safety. At grade 5 and 6 the biggest issues were sharing passwords with others and to some extent bullying online.
We tasked the students with designing a video that taught others about possible online issues, with the idea that they should make people aware of the fact that what you post online relates to how people view you offline. |
